We all have been invited to chant in a Yoga class the sound of “OM” (aka
“AUM”) but do we really know the meaning of this word and the benefits of it?
“OM” is a very simple sound but with a very complex meaning.
Mantras, or sacred chants, come in different shapes and sizes and the single-syllable mantras (like “OM”) are also known as “Bija” that means “seed”.
The name “seed” symbolizes the power a tiny seed has to contain an entire majestic Tree, just like the “Bija” contains a creative force and an enormous amount of spiritual wisdom.
In that sense, “OM” is considered (especially in the Hindu culture) the primordial seed of the Universe itself. It has also been associated with various concepts, such as “mystical syllable”, “cosmic sound” or even directly associated with the “Divine Creation”, but not necessarily related to a specific religion.
Yes, you can find historic sacred texts where “OM” is widely used, but, it
is really what brings to us in chanting it that is unique.
Chanting the Mantra “OM” (and in general all the Mantras), creates a special
vibration to our body that activates our nervous system, calming the mind.
The “OM” becomes more than a sound, it’s a wave that flows through the Universe, containing all the sound in one word.
Chanting “OM” with devotion and a pure heart can lead to a spiritual
journey connecting us to our higher-self, it helps to reduce stress and anxiety, improves focus and concentration, balances emotions and it provides a deep connection with everything surrounding, with the entire Universe.
That’s why chanting together creates also a beautiful sense of joy, of
connection and union with the people around us, a sense of Community.
Next time you are invited to chant the “OM”, join the chanting with an open mind (if you haven’t yet) and, notice how powerful it is.
Namaste
