What is a Mudra

Mudra means “seal”, “gesture” and they can be offered in a Yoga practice, as hand gestures to facilitate the flow of energy (Life force), to balance and calm the mind and the body.

I am sure you have seen or practiced at least one of the several mudras during one of your Yoga class but, did you know they are also employed in dancing, sculpture and painting?

They are closely interconnected with meditation, breathing and asana practices (I really love to add them on my sessions), not necessarily linked to any specific religious beliefs as they are considered secular and powerful.

Basing on Ayurvedic philosophy, the human body is constructed of 5 elements (Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth) and the same can be found in our hands.

When the elements are in balance it is believed that the body is healthy, when you encounter sickness and diseases, the energy of these 5 elements is unbalanced.

As you can see from the above Imagine, Elements on the hands are directly related to the organs of the body, that’s why stimulating fingers with special gestures, you create “locks” that guide the body energy flow and activate dormant vital forces, bringing an overall state of wellness, balancing all the elements.

Mudras go beyond hand gestures, they serve as a pathway to mental and spiritual consciousness
