How to start your journey into Meditation

When it comes to meditation there are a lot of misconception related to it.

Bringing this topic to my classes, the very first reactions is often the same: we cannot do it and/or we never knew how to do it.

Here you have some tips to help you in starting your Meditation journey.

  • FIND YOUR QUIET SPACE

It is very important to find a place where you don’t have many distractions and where you feel very good in it

It can be anywhere, a small room in your home, a quiet corner of your garden, an empty beach on an early morning, a terrace maybe.

  • CREATE A SACRED SPACE

Not necessary but, it can help to start some cozy rituals for the place we have chosen, like burning a candle, you can also use some aromatherapy (with organic essential oils or incense).

  • NO DISTRACTIONS

If possible, be alone for the time you meditate, ask to your loved ones to honor your space just for the needed time to find your peace, it is easier to meditate on a silence space. For the same reason, it is necessary to leave out of your space also cell phones or any possible distraction.

  • FIND YOUR COMFORTABLE POSITION

This is one of the most important parts of the meditation. Where we are comfortable and in peace with our body, we find our mental peace easier.

There are traditional positions like the “Lotus “but, you can try to be seated with the legs crossed and maybe, with a bolster or a cushion under your seat. The spine has to be straight but not rigid, you need to become comfortable but not too much (to don’t fall asleep). You’ll eventually hold that position longer when meditate will become your habit so, find one that allows you to stay longer with no discomfort. Another solution can be to seat on a chair, with the hands on the knees, palms down.

Practicing a physical Yoga is also a good start to become flexible enough to eventually hold longer the meditation position (reason why Asanas are part of Yoga, but we will talk deeper about it on a different post…)

  • WRONG WAY TO MEDITATE

There is not a right or wrong way to meditate, if you allow yourself to be open to it, if you try to meditate and you keep practicing, you are on a good path!

  • BREATHWORK

Deepening our breath, maybe using some breathwork techniques, can certainly help us calming our body and mind. Focusing on our own breath is the best way to start.

Listening to your body is the next step, you don’t need to touch it, just visualize it basing on the sensations you are experiencing.

  • LET IT GO

We created our space, we found our seated position, and everything seems perfect to start but, now that we are calm, those thoughts are popping up, one after the other.

Let them be as they are. Ignoring them is not the solution, take note and go over them. When you find yourself drawing into them again, go back to your breath, focus on the air coming inside and outside of your nostrils. The breaths help us to focus on the present and to release what doesn’t serve us in the now so, take a deep and steady breath and relax.

  • DISCIPLINE

My biggest suggestion is to don’t get discouraged. Meditation is like Yoga, a lifetime journey. Every time it gives us different sensations but always fulfilling our mind and soul.

As a starting point, 5 or 10 minutes a day are ideals, when you find yourself wanting more and becoming calmer and meditation become easier, you can lengthen it and go as far as you want to.

  • RIGHT TIME TO MEDITATE

Meditate in the morning has always been the most suggested timing but, meditation is also very personal, any time you need to do it and you find your space and peace, that will be always the right time.

  • GET OUT OF YOUR MEDITATION SLOWLY

It will allow you to go back next time to your meditation more easily. Take your time before to open the eyes then, put away the candle or the incense with no rush and express a sense of gratitude to yourself for the time you dedicated to your body and mind, take your time.
