I am sure you noticed that when there is symbolism of Yoga, the Lotus is one of the most common and used but, maybe you never really thought of the reason why.
Let’s start with more info about the Lotus plant. The plant is singular, it can last thousands of years, the leaves and the flower are water-repellent, several parts of the plant are edible (leaves, seeds and shoots) so it can also have a culinary use (spread particularly in Asia). This plant has been used for thousands of years also in medicine.
The ability to flourish in murky habitats has contributed to this flower to be used as symbols on several different ancient religions and practices (like Buddhism, Hinduism or on the practice of Yoga).
In Buddhism for example, Buddha is often depicted seated on lotus flowers or on a Lotus throne, the fact that the flower rises from the mud it resembles the enlighted rising above the ‘unclean’ world.
There is a nice proverb saying “ No Mud No Lotus” : it reminds us that growth and beauty often arise from challenging circumstances.
It is an invitation and a reminder to embrace difficulties and imperfections, as they provide the fertile ground for transformation and self-improvement,
The Lotus is a symbol of validation and hope for everyone. A beautiful flower that rises from the mud and the swamp represents a beautiful life that can emerge from adversities or from past traumas.
The Lotus flower becomes a symbol of spiritual growth and enlightenment.
The physical Lotus poses in Yoga (where the feet resemble the petals) is one of the toughest to keep for long time. In ancient Yoga it was introduced into the practice with the sole scope to Meditate and it required advance practice to seat still on the pose for hours, or days.
Next time you see a Lotus flower, let’s be encouraged to:
- Embrace challenges and difficulties as an opportunity to growth
- Transform obstacles into steppingstones for self-improvement.
- Cultivate perseverance and resilience.
- Find beauty and wisdom in imperfection.
- Rise above our challenges, just like the Lotus !
